Question
Who was Imam Waki’ (rahimahullah)? If he were to grade a narrator as reliable (fhiqah), would his grading be accepted?
Answer
Imam Waki’ ibn Jarrah (rahimahullah) was a great Muhaddith of Iraq. He was born in either the year 128 A.H. or 129 A.H. and passed away in the year 197 A.H.
He acquired Hadith from great Aimmah and Muhaddithun such as: Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, Sulayman Al-A’amash, Ibn Jurayj, Al-Awzai’, and others (rahimahumullah).
He had many students that became great Aimmah and Muhaddithun such as: ‘Abdullah ibn Mubarak, ‘Abdurrahman ibn Mahdi, Ahmad ibn Hambal, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, and others (rahimahumullah).

If he were to grade a narrator, his grading would indeed be considered. Imam Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has listed his name among those Muhaddithun whose statements regarding narrators [i.e Jarh and Ta’dil] will be relied upon and considered.

The great Imam ash-Shafi Rehmatullah Aleyhi’, He went to his teacher Waki (رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ) and Complaining about the weakness of his memory.
He told him, ‘abandon rebellion, for knowledge is a light And the light of Allah is not bestowed upon a rebel.’
मशहूर इमाम अस शा-फई रहमतुल्लाह ऐ ताला अलैही, एक बार अपने शैख़ टीचर वकी रहमतुल्लाह अलैही' के पास गये और आपसे अपनी याददाश्त कमजोर होने की शिकायत की।
"आपने उनको नसीहत करते हुए फरमाया, अना *(*गुनाह, विद्रोह, नफ़रत, हठधर्मिता) को छोड़ दो क्योंकि इल्म नूर है*
और अल्लाह की नूरानियत, गुनाहगारों, अनापरस्त या नफरत करने वाले को नहीं दी जाती।"
